Surrey High Sheriff Youth Awards - Latest News
A new project – called 'Alcohol Lessons for Life' – so impressed the High Sheriff Youth Awards Council that a special one-off grant of £5,000 has been awarded for 2011-12. This has enabled the comprehensive programme of teacher training and classroom interventions to be developed by Coram Life Education and rolled out across five Surrey primary schools.
Top year pupils at St John's School in Dorking were the first to pilot the project. They welcomed the High Sheriff of Surrey 2011-12, Professor Michael Joy OBE, to their Parent Assembly on Wednesday 18th January (left) – and delivered powerful messages to him and other invited guests on the dangers of alcohol, the harm it causes to health, and the impact it has on the community in terms of anti-social behaviour.
HSYA Sports Team of the Year 2011
The High Sheriff Youth Awards scheme recognises that participation in sport can achieve outstanding results in diverting young people towards a healthy lifestyle and away from potential antisocial behaviour. In partnership with Active Surrey, HSYA sponsored a new award presented by the High Sheriff at the county's Sports Awards ceremony in November 2011. Three Surrey groups were selected as finalists for the HSYA 'Sports Team of the Year 2011'.
The winner was Runnymede's Boxing Inclusion Zone – The BIZ, who strongly matched the award criteria. In second place was Pitstop Wanderers FC at Leatherhead, with Colne Valley Girls FC commended for its achievement in helping young people make Surrey safer. The HSYA plans to sponsor this Award again in 2012.
