YES, YES

For the second year running the High Sheriff Youth Awards has awarded a vital grant to Surrey Fire and Rescue Service's Youth Engagement Scheme (YES). The £500 cheque ensures the scheme can continue to help improve the lives of some of the county's most vulnerable young people.

Lady Toulson, High Sheriff of Surrey 2009-2010, attended an awards ceremony in November 2009 where five young people between 14 and 16 successfully graduated on a five-day course at Farnham Fire Station. They had actively taken part in firefighter training under the watchful eye of dedicated fire instructors. At the ceremony, they carried out demonstrations to showcase the skills they had learnt in front of guests, including their parents.

“Our grant recognises the fact that as part of the YES programme, participants also receive accreditation of the new, core skills they have achieved from the Open College Network. This provides them with a platform from which to progress on to further qualifications,” explains the High Sheriff. “If the young people graduating on the YES programme continue to apply themselves in the same way and become solid members of the community, it justifies the continuing support by HSYA of this valuable scheme.”
